Pft, that's because good housing in SF is so competitive, landlords will only rent to you if you have pristine credit. And no pets. If you have pets and spotty credit, it's San Mateo and Santa Clara counties for you. Or East Bay.

What's the reason for the other cities, especially the upper midwest?

Pfft, the glass is always half-empty when it comes to SF being praised for anything. There is no city in the US and likely the world that is held under a microscope the way SF is lol. Anytime I see a thread saying anything positive about SF I go in KNOWING that w/o fail there will be some hater(s) spinning negatively whatever good is being pointed out. How expected.

Good to see you back here again. Gotta correct you on one thing though; the world doesn't hate on SF the way those in fly-over country USA do and they know that and that irks them even more. See when THEY talk about SF, they really mean the bay area not knowing the real difference and even that is wrong so excuse them lol

I'm originally from "Flyoverland" and honestly nobody there really cares or really thinks about SF. The only people who do are those who live in SF and they think they are very special- even though half of them are from NJ or OH.

Oh so what. I moved to SF from the most overrated city in the US, Austin, TX, and absolutely love it here. I just don't think that the city's high credit scores mean anything, good or bad. I just see it as the result of arbitrary standards imposed on people due to high demand for apts.

I don't know. I don't live in the other cities, just in San Francisco.

70% of SF's residents are from outside California (with around half of those being from the US), so doesn't that mean that lots of people DO think about SF? SF is a popular and well known place, deal with it. You sound just like one of the haters Jman and Gentoo are referring to. We don't really care much about others or what others think of us though (just like most people, anywhere), but when people constantly come to the SF forum to whine and talk sh!#, then of course the people who do like SF are going to react. Some of the know-it-all, holier than-thou SF residents (often transplants) are annoying as hell, i agree, but lots of cities have people like that. Just look at NYC for a shining example.

From the article on the first slide:

Quote:
When he studied “fiscal fitness” of cities a few years ago, western Pennsylvania and the Midwest ranked high, just as they did on this list. “Talking with financial professionals in those areas, they spoke about a culture of thrift, saving, and the ability to look at the long term. Psychologists would also call this an ability to defer gratification,” he said. “There is also something in the Germanic and Scandinavian ethic that is more frugal and less indulgent.”

Some of the other cities on the list are notable high-tech hubs, where there tends to be more demand for jobs and higher income.

Seems to be more of a cultural thing with regards to the good finances of the upper midwest. Too bad more of CA, or the US for that matter, isn't like this.
