So I'm going to be working at the SFVA soon and was wondering where is a decent area I could live that isn't more than a 30 min commute, for a max rent of $1400 for a studio/1 bed. Seems like since the VA is in the extreme northwest corner of SF I can't BART there or commute from the East Bay. So far I've been mostly looking at the Richmond or Sunset district. Also, I don't mind cloudy/cold weather (I'm coming from Boston).

I can just say you're definitely on the right track.. Richmond district is affordable for SF, safe and it's the nearest to the VA.

Inner Richmond if you want a bit more restaurants and bars...Outer Richmond if you want a bit more quiet and a parking space. $1400 is a bit tough for a 1br but it's doable, and it's definitely doable for a studio out there, you could probably find a studio for around $1200.

Default Outer Richmond

Outer Richmond is a little less expensive. If you like to be close to a beautiful natural environment - Outer Richmond is it! You are close to Ocean Beach and Lands Ends and Golden Park. And there is a great mile-long trail along Lands End from about 33rd Ave (near Legion of Honor) to Ocean Beach. Views of the Golden Gate Bridge. In addition it is a quiet and safe neighborhood. Best of luck with your apartment hunting!
