I have a job in Santa Cruz, however I would like to live in Monterey and commute. How is the traffic for this direction (Monterey to SC in am and SC to Monterey in PM)? The reason I would like Monterey is for the safe and well-maintained city. I also have been considering Moss Landing, Pacific Grove, Scotts Valley. Suggestions? I would be renting and want to avoid any area that I would not feel safe walking in at night alone. Carmel is out of the price range. My husband works from home so good internet is a requirement. Any knowledge of the internet north of SC in Scotts valley and Ben Lomond areas? Thank you in advance for all of your input.

It's probably about an hour...I would live in the SC area for the shorter commute and the warmer/less gloomy weather. And SC is pretty safe any time of day other than some areas near downtown though Pacific St. is pretty safe at night because it's pretty busy. If you think Santa Cruz is scary then I dunno what to say. Maybe look at the area west of downtown SC near the coast, it has trails along the coast and pretty fancy houses. Areas like Scotts Valley and Ben Lomond are pretty rural compared with SC itself so it depends on if you prefer that.

Should be able to get high speed internet pretty much anywhere in SC County, I lived for a time in Bonny Doon in 2004 which is pretty remote and we had broadband from some local company.

Thank you for the help. That is good to hear that the commute wouldn't be longer than an hour. If the internet was fine back in 2004 then it should be great now

Don't quote me on the commute time, it's been a long time since I've spent any time down there. I think it was like an hour from SC to Monterey without traffic, and it can get a bit sticky on Hwy 1 during commute hours. Other people here will have a better idea or you can ask on the San Jose board where people live in Santa Cruz or at least closer to there than SF.
