You can buy a ticket at the Fisherman's Wharf area.

There are ferry boat tours that go to Alcatraz and others go beneath the Golden Gate Bridge--very cool.

Buy your tickets online, in the summer weekends always sell out early and it's hit and miss on weekdays.

Default Alcatraz and the Bridge

I would suggest you to go on weekday if you want your privacy as not many people go there on weekdays and on weekends it’s a big hit. Also you will get tickets easily on weekdays but not on weekends as you have to book minimum two days before to get tickets.

Yeah, weekdays are better.

Weekends are jam packed.

Bring a jacket. It can get chilly over there.

Also you don't need to "buy a tour." You can either use the park's audio tour for free, where you put on some headphones and it has descriptions of the different parts of the jail narrated by a former jailer, and with interview excerpts from former prisoners and jailers and so on, it's actually really well done and very atmospheric, you can find some videos on youtube that have the audio. Also the park service does tours at specific times where park rangers lead you around and give tours on different subjects. I imagine if you go the park service's website for Alcatraz you can get a schedule. The ferry and park fee is I think $18 which is kind of high but you get the audio tour and optional guided tours, plus a scenic ferry ride.

I usually wait until the summers over to go to Alcatraz, it gets too crowded this time of year

Ive met several people during my numerous trips there, I met former prison guards, former prisoners, native americans that took over Alcatraz back in the 1969–71 Native American occupation , the lady that wrote a book about her life on Alcatraz as a child, Park Ranger / Author JOHN MARTINI
