I'm currently a dental student in Boston, and I would like to move somewhere else and start a new life when I finish school. I've lived in Boston pretty much my entire life, and would like a change (even though I like Boston a lot). I've been thinking of San Francisco, due to its weather, desirability, asian food, better LGBT scene, and more. However, I'm concerned about the troubled economic state in California. Just how hard would it be to move to SF and establish a dental practice there? I probably would not have too many professional connections and friends (I will have many in Boston and my family is here as well). Also, dental insurance covers more in MA than CA. Do you think it would be worth it to move to SF from Boston? I'm obviously not going to move in a couple of years.

No idea but it seems like it can be hard to make a dental appointment here especially as a new patient, seems like they are often booked up, maybe we could use some more dentists. I would try and get in touch with some dentists here and see what they have to say.

Another one of my concerns would have to be how "business-friendly" SF is compared to Boston or any other non-Californian city.

Does it have to be San Francisco or would the suburbs within 30 - 40 minutes (or less) of SF work for you? The suburbs are a bit cheaper than living in San Francisco. As to your question about San Francisco being business friendly, I don't think so. The looney progressive city government can make things difficult for business.

San Francisco would be a good location to setup a practice. The job market is good here when it comes to higher end jobs, so you'll have plenty of people who can afford dental care.

Business friendly? Depends who you ask, unless you ask dentists who actually work here all you'll get is a bunch of political clap-trap. There's a lot of money changing hands here and a lot of wealthy people but commercial rents are high so I imagine if you aren't successful it can be hard to stay open. Might be best to work for an established dentist and learn about the market before opening your own practice.

There's a lot of people here, they all have teeth.
Seems like business friendly climate or no, dentists will always be in demand.
