Hi friends,

I live near Toronto right now but I'm tired of being here. I'm 23, I finished undergrad, I have no debt to anyone and I'm not in a relationship. So I'm going to pack up and get on a plane and fly to San Francisco (should mention I have US citizenship so working there won't be an issue ). My plan is to spend the first few nights in a hostel, and spend my days looking for a room for rent in a house somewhere. (I have a cousin in Berkeley but I don't want to crash at her place for too long. ) I don't care about the size of the room and I don't care about commuting up to an hour to get to the city. I have been combing through listings on Craigslist but as with finding a job, it's hard to secure anything without physically being in the city. (At this point I should ask if anyone knows of any safe rooms anywhere - up to an hour by public transit.)

What I'm wondering is if there are any social groups in SF that would help me make a few contacts relatively quickly. Or if anyone knows of any decent hangout spots, i.e. a cafe or something. My primary concern is finding roof to put over my head, but I also want to meet people!

I realize that it sounds starry-eyed to fly out there with no apartment and no job lined up but hell I'm young and if this isn't the time to try something like this, then when is? So please if you're going to tell me not to do it, don't. Waste of your time and mine!

Thanks guys!

I don't know if you went to college in the states or not, but if you did you might want to check to see if your college has a San Francisco alumni chapter. A lot of them will plan activities, happy hours, and will gather Saturdays to watch their football team play. Just about every medium to large college has a group out here. That worked really well for me.

Hi there: Your plan sounded like a good one. I am wondering how it went. I visit SF every other year in the summer. I am visiting again in June 2012. Like you, I want to meet some people. Hope you can respond. My name is Max from Louisville, Ky.
