Well if you come here some of the book stores have good local history sections. There is a whole series of books on various towns around here including many early photos, showing development from the pioneers to present.

Yeah go to any bookstore here and there's a bunch of them, it's the Images of America series I guess. Too bad all the good bookstores around here keep closing.

The Barbary Coast is a pretty entertaining and interesting book about SF History. It focuses more on the time following the Gold Rush in the mid 1800's, and less about the early pioneers though. Still worth the read though.

I highly recommend a visit to the Oakland Museum of California...really FANTASTIC place where you'll find out everything you need on the history of the state/Bay Area.

These books are fantastic. You can pretty much find one for any town/city in the USA.

Very interesting books! Both writers came to California and searched for gold but didn't find much and both returned to the east. Bryant St. in San Francisco is named after one of the writers.

^ I second The Barbary Coast. Definitely worth a read, and I should add that it's the same author that penned the classic Gangs of New York. Another book I recommend is this one http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Dust-Guns...5153284&sr=8-2 it's not confined to SF, but is as comprehensive a history of the California wild west as you'll find. The author is from SF as well.

The Bancroft Library at Cal has an extensive collection of early CA history. I'd start there.
