In true Bay Area fashion, the location of a shared stadium could be the deal breaker according to the article.

We'll see how this all pans out...

This has been in the works for a while now. Uncle Al certainly can't afford to float the cost of a new stadium, so that's probably why he's sending Amy Trask to negotiate with the Yorks about sharing the Santa Clara one. They don't really have much choice anyway, as the NFL pretty much demands they share, like the Giants/Jets in their new stadium. This way, a lot more money can be put into it and the league can brag about another crazy-awesome thing a la Jerry Jones' Funhouse in Texas.

The Santa Clara location really isn't the best location especially not for Raiders fans who tend to come from more north east parts of the bay area. An Oakland location would be much more centrally located as well as accessible by bart and lots of already built infrastructural. The freeway is right there and the area is well designed to deal with lots of traffic. Santa Clara just doesn't seem like a good choice other than its already in the works and there is plenty of open land.

Which is the difficulty of doing it in SF or Oakland. Bulldozing the Mausoleum and building a new one would be great, but the A's have to move first, and it's rather difficult to imagine Mr. Davis playing in Candlestick in the interim, or Niner fans accepting games in the East Bay. Not sure UC Berkeley would allow the Raiders at their stadium, after refurbishments.

Works for the Giants and Jets

Would SF fans accept the 49ers playing in Oakland? That would be a tough pill.

Jed will have to sell the idea.

It would be a tough pill to swallow, but so would having the niners move to Santa Clara. Economically, Oakland makes most sense for both teams. Freeway and Bart access makes the current Coliseum location the most compelling potential location.

Besides, there are many NFL teams that don't play in their home cities. Neither NY team does, the Cowboys play in Arlington, the Patriots play in Foxboro, the Cardinals play in Glendale.

I think a big wrinkle in all this talk about a shared stadium in Oakland is going to be where are the A's are going to play? I don't think the current location can support a baseball stadium, an arena and a new football stadium.

It should be built at the Coliseum site.
