Their existence and their prevalence/noticeability are two different things. If there happen to be rats in sewers...I don't really care as I never hang out in sewers. In NYC, it looks like your daily commute in the subway system will get you rat exposure...and maybe even in the form of them being inside the train with you! You go to any park at night-even those in the better parts of Manhattan, you'll apparently see rats running around. Same goes for many city streets! Whereas I've never seen a single rat, mouse or roach in 10 years in California. And I've never won any cleanliness awards...

I've seen rats on the BART tracks. Possums live in the sewers throughout the East Bay...they come out at night searching for food. Had this in neighborhoods both in Oakland and Richmond.

In NYC, their rat problem is obviously due to their 300+ years as being a central shipping destination for the United States. San Francisco has nowhere near the history or the amount of boats reaching its shores in that time.

Sure. It's just a major dip in quality of life when you go from never seeing a rat to seeing several a day, every day.

They are actually worse in residential / quasi surburban / suburban / rural than more urban. They live in the Algerian Ivy. I believe they are Norway Rats.

Roaches are more of a SoCal thing (they are quite bad there).

Not sure if it's the weather, but there is much talk of bedbugs around the Bay Area right now. Rats and roaches, not so much.
