I also remember seeing rats on the BART tracks, for example in Powell station.

But not in many years, I have to admit.

I have seen several over the years. One took up residence in our house and periodicallly raided our food supply. The little SOB consumed a whole bag of sunflower seeds and cheetos before I was able to nail him with a trap. He used to drive our cats crazy with his scurrying noises etc. When I finallly nailed him he was quite fat with nice glossy coat. He reminded me of Templeton from Charlottes Web.

One time when I was in the service in the 70's in San Antonio my roommate stopped his car to let what he thought was a cat cross the road. It was an enormous rat. Those fellows can be quite large under the right circumstances. I hate them with a passion, but they are quite good at being a rat.

One drunken night, I stumbled from North Beach up to Chinatown. I was ravenous. I went into a Chinese restaurant and placed a to-go order. I went to the back of the restaurant to use the bathroom and a rat the size of a cat zoomed right by me.

My bladder remained full and my order was cancelled as I hightailed it out of there!

SF Department of Public Health - Rodent Abatement

Norway rats and roof rats - the same critters can be found here in Washington State.

Admittedly, save for a year in West Hollywood, I lived near the ocean in all my years in SoCal. I never saw a roach. And I was never that clean. Maybe being near the ocean helped, I don't know.

I never see them in the Muni portion of that subway, thought that part is obviously above the Bart section. But just saying you haven't seen them in several years is a dramatic difference to NYC.

Wow can't say I blame ya! The alleys in and around Stockton st. would be where I'd not be surprised to see some. But walking/riding through Stockton a billion times day and night I've never seen a rat.

What was the name of that Chinese restaurant?
