Not that anyone ever actually *dials* a phone anymore, but now that the 628 overlay is imminent, anyone phoning anyone anywhere (even within the same area code) will have to dial 1+area code+number.

Numbers With Classic 415 Area Code In Short Supply As New 628 Area Code Arrives « CBS San Francisco

I'm guessing that SF is one of the very last large cities in the US where you can still dial just 7 digits.

Why? How do you define "large" cities? You can dial 7 digits in Seattle. Albuquerque. Pheonix. If you mean "huge" cities, like LA and NY, you might be right. But those are very few cities.

Good lord, can't they just split Marin off and give it Area Code 628.

Likewise, can't they just give Sunnyvale and other non-San Jose parts of Santa Clara County 669.

Overlays are a pain in the ass.

In my previous experience with overlays it was not necessary to dial "1". It seems like a small thing, except in instances where it is necessary to first dial "9" for an outside line. Doing so, then dialing "1" results in many accidental 911 calls.

The end of an era. 415 used to encompass the entire Bay Area. The initial splits were 707 and 408. Believe it or not, there was a small part of NW Sunnyvale, not to mention the entire Peninsula and entire East Bay, that was still 415 circa 1980s.

Shortly after that, the 650 and 510 codes were carved out. Then later 831 and 925, etc, etc.
