Yeah you wouldn't be able to ride through San Francisco at all with a bike, at least through downtown. I was thinking he/she could just keep a beater bike locked up at the SSF station (if there was space, some of the stations have open racks inside the station as well as the pay-to-play outdoor lockers) and only use it to ride back and forth to work. Folding bikes are a cool idea but I think they're like $1000 at least and wouldn't be as good for riding as a regular bike which is more like $200 for a basic new bike.

Folding bikes are $200-300 nowadays.

Looks like you're right, there's quite a few for around $150 to $200 on Amazon. Last time I looked was a couple years ago and they looked more like $1000 and only made by a few manufacturers.
