What do you think?

Take That, Tokyo! San Francisco Approves 220-Square-Foot 'Micro-Apartments' | Wired Design | Wired.com

If you ask me its a good idea. San Francisco needs affordable housing, just housing in general. Apparently the city only approved a very small amount of units(375) because there has been some push back around this plan.

Guess some people who live in San Francisco don't want to live in a crowded city?

San Francisco has a long history of people living as permanent residents in residential hotels. Some were nice places on Nob Hill, some were dives on Skid Row. Paul Groth wrote a book about this called Living Downtown. By allowing very small, full service apartments, the city refines and modernizes this tradition. There's an enormous demand for single people to live in San Francisco, I don't see the harm of allowing them to live in very small units.

Could work for homeless housing also................

I think it's a great idea! You shouldn't have to make 6 figures to live in the heart of any major city. This would be perfect for single people or young professionals. I'm all for having more options.

Unfortunately, by the time those units are built, they'll probably be renting for $3000 a month. At least.

Hey, if private developers want to build it, and private citizens want to live in them, let them do it. Let the free market work. Anything to relieve the outrageous demand for units is a good thing.

I am all for mini apartments, but in the proposals they were thinking the rents for these things would be like $1600 (at today's rents). What the heck? No thanks, I can get a lot better apartment outside of SF for $1600. Maybe $1200 is a reasonable price for a tiny studio. And that is the absolute max for a very good neighborhood.

Interesting that $900 is considered affordable there. We have those here in Seattle and they start at $495-$650, and people moving here are shocked at the high prices.

Funny how this is seen as a great thing, while people living in closets is an affront to civilization.

Lots of money, but with the amount of time people spend on their techtoys (on C-D?) these days, living space isn't necessarily at such a premium as it once was. Location, Location, Location. Put a bunk bed in there and call it a dorm, or a barracks.
