Less than 1% of Oakland residents can actually afford to attend Head Royce from K-12.

And parents in Oakland that go private generally stay in OUSD through elementary and/or middle school. Very few parents do K-12 for private school.

Not to mention, Oakland has lots of charter schools, private schools offer scholarships etc. You'd be surprised at the economic diversity in the Oakland private schools. Lots of solidly middle class parents.

this is true parents who can afford private schools usually live in neighborhoods with highly ranked elementary schools.

also religous affiliated schools hebrew catholic etc are a lot cheaper than headroyce.

Do you have any statistics to back up these points? Like percentage of students using grants or scholarships to attend private school? Percentage of low income students being admitted to top charter schools?

I'm not doubting your points, but I don't see any data or facts to back up what you're attempting to claim.

Neighbors and coworkers. (and random strangers out in public....) I am the sort of person that just attracts random info about people.

Contrary to popular believe (on this forum) Oakland residents talk about the positives and negatives of The Town.

As they always encourage you to do when considering buying a home (especially where the school district adds a price premium). There are plenty of situations where it doesn't make sense to add on $300K to your mortgage in order to live in a "good" school district. Especially when you realize you could send your kid to a good private high school for ~$10K over 4 years. You'll easily make up for it in the differing housing prices. (Since 300K adds about $2000 to your monthly mortgage payments.....) Enough to send 2 kids to private school

Now if you plan for 3 kids? Then the math might be different.

And yet they provide 4 million dollars of financial aid to almost a third of their student body.

Head-Royce continues its strong commitment to socio-economic diversity through its financial assistance programs. For the 2012-2013 school year the School awarded nearly $4,000,000 to over 250 students in grades K-12. In addition, the Board of Trustees annually budgets additional money to support high school students in a work-study program. This year $15,000 is designated to support the work-study program.

Head-Royce: Financial Aid

So less than .0000001% of OUSD children get financial aid to attend a decent school? That's not something to be proud of. gl

Seriously. And Oakland only has one private school in the entire city. And even more ridculous.... Oakland hasn't seen the public high schools improve at all. There are absolutely no options in the entire city....

mod cut

Now that I am though, I might as well also mention that Head Royce is in good company; College Preparatory School awards nearly $2 million of financial aid every year to around a quarter of its student body. Between Head Royce and College Prep that's around 340 students - a full 1% of Oakland's K-12 student population - that get to attend two of the top 30 private schools in the country either for free or subsidized tuition. That may not mean much to you but it means the world to the families who are fortunate enough to do so, particularly to those coming from the most disadvantaged areas of Oakland where the schools indeed suck.
