I posted last week about a group trip to Bolinas. Due to the fact that Bolinas may be difficult for some of us to get to, we're now considering renting a house in Half Moon Bay instead.

If you were choosing between these two towns and didn't know the SF area well, which would you rather spend a week in? Is there any reason Half Moon Bay isn't a nice place to stay? The rentals seem much more reasonably priced--is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Half Moon Bay is nice. Why would it be harder to get to Bolinas?

I'd prefer Half Moon Bay, mostly because they have a nice small town area (Main St, north of Correas St) while Bolinas is all residential. If you also have a car, there are a lot more places to go within 15 minutes or so to Half Moon Bay, and a lot of variety in what is available to you.

My impression is that Half Moon Bay tends to get a lot more fog than Bolinas. I might recommend Santa Cruz, a little further south than Half Moon Bay. A slightly longer drive, but worth it, imo. There's more to do there, too.

Several members of our group will not have cars. That's great once you get to a destination, but getting from SFO to a rental house is the challenge. Half Moon Bay, being much closer to SFO, is reasonable for those thinking of taking a taxi or shuttle.

So.... have one or two with cars pick people up and have them pay the driver?

Honestly it's Bolinas and not that far away.

Dont get me wrong Half Moon Bay is nice but the logistics, to me, dont make sense canceling your first choice.

I believe there is also bus service from SFO to Marin County.

Look at private shuttles as well if you have many people that would be doable if the cost was split.

Go for Half Moon Bay. Nice little town and nearby is Pillar Point fishing harbor with many restaurants and a few hotels. You can rent a kayak and paddle around the harbor My title and www.smharbor.com/pillarpoint/pprec.htm

Samtrans has 2 bus lines to Half Moon Bay - 17 & 294 - one from San Mateo and the other from Pacifica. samtrans.com

Santa Cruz would be another good option! Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. They also have a pier near the boardwalk with several restaurants.
