For a long time San Francisco's comedy club scene has been thought of as huge. Maybe not New York huge, but comparable to Chicago (?)

I think it's heyday was back in the 60's when Lenny Bruce and others were breaking new boundaries. There's not much going on these days compared with other cities. Chicago by comparison is a massive incubator of comedy talent, lots of SNL actors and writers came from there, for what it's worth. The comedy scene there is really active and there's a lot of workshop-style improv places, and not just Second City. NYC is probably the biggest place for people trying to be edgy and break new boundaries. LA meanwhile is big just because it's the world's entertainment capital.

Pretty dead. A vast number of comedy clubs have closed. Alex Bennett who was a big proponent of Bay Area Comedy, left here for New York early 2000's. Most of the good comedians left for LA and have never been heard since.
