At the moment I am currently commuting to the Lake Merritt/ Grand Ave area for work on Bart from Fremont. This can only continue through the month as I have to move out of my current situation.

I have an opportunity to sub-let a room on Seminary a few blocks south of Macarthur blvd. I have driven by the area in the day and early evening and it seems more "suburban" with a lot of families. This is totally cool with me as I spend most of my time in other areas.

I myself am a 23 year old (mixed) male and just wanted to know if anyone has experience with the public transportation in this area specifically taking the bus and/or walking to the Coliseum Bart. I am not dumb and don't put myself in bad situations, but I have read on here that a bit east specifically the Eastmont area is not a good place to be around.

It would only be for 4 months and it is in my price range for the time being while I save up to possibly move closer to the Lake after.

Any thoughts?

ps. I have no car, but a bicycle. I don't plan on "hanging" around the area, just somewhere to sleep and be in the house when I'm not in work or in other areas with friends.

Thanks!

I have plenty of experience with public transportation in that area and the area in general. Do not walk to the Coliseum BART all the way from Seminary... Take the 45 bus from Seminary to the BART. Seminary between Foothill and International is one of the worst neighborhoods in Oakland and especially at night which is where you'll be walking through if you walk from BART. There's no nice way to walk from/to the BART from/to where you are... the nicest way to walk there is up/down Havenscourt but the area you have to traverse to even get there between BART and International is just as bad as anything around Seminary. Stick with the bus.

I've been up and down Seminary (below Foothill) and the rest of the areas I mentioned at night, it's not somewhere you'll just "blend in". you have to know where you are and who the people are. If you're out there at night, look like a easy mark (for someone with a gun that is) and no one knows who you are that's an invitation for something to happen to you. In the daytime it's a whole different story but if you live in the area you'll have to deal with how it is at night, and especially when it starts getting dark at 5 pm.

That's some good advice. The 5900 block of Bromley Avenue (which crosses Seminary in between Foothill and International) was dubbed the most dangerous block in Oakland in the mid-2000s. A few years ago they demolished some of the apartment buildings on Bromley that housed many of the criminals but that stretch of Seminary is still very rough.

Thanks for that. I will not walk to/from Bart for sure then. In terms of living, I will be north of Foothill on Seminary. And I don't plan to be out much at night in that area anyways, just taking the bus from Macarthur and a short 3-4 block walk to the house.
