I'm looking to sending a local box of chocolates to out of the area, but I haven't lived in the East Bay long enough to find a good chocolate place. I liked Schurra's Fine Confections in San Jose, but I'm not going down that way any time soon. Any local recommendations that aren't Ghiradelli? Bonus points for shade-grown, non-slave labor cocoa beans (I'm only sort of kidding).

I've also seen a chocolatier stand at the farmer's market on Saturdays at Splash Pad Park in the Grand Lake area in Oakland.

Barlovento is the Grand Lake farmers' market vendor; they also have a kitchen/shop in Jack London Square. Chocolatier Blue in Berkeley is also good. We've sent boxes of both to people at various points and they've always been appreciated. Miette in Jack London Square also ships candies and cookies if you're not committed to chocolates; we've also sent those on occasion. I know Barlovento sources their chocolate pretty carefully, but not sure about the other two.

Oh, and also Bittersweet! They don't really do filled chocolates, though, if that's what you're looking for. Shops in Rockridge and DTO.

Why do people in NY always rage about See's Chocolates? I have a friend in NYC, and I have to send her and her mom both a supply of the lollipops.

Vice Chocolates is very good (usually at Jack London Market or Temescal).

I also like Cocbella in SF.

Bittersweet doesn't make a lot of stuff, but a great source for a wide variety sources. (mostly bars, not truffles)

Michael Mishcner is a great idea, because if you time it on Saturday, you can hit the farmers market for options then end at the store.
