Does anyone here who grew up in the 70's and 80's in California remember these strutting dance styles?

These two clips highlight San Francisco area dancers.

Nice clips! But I think it is referred to as "popping" now. I can do a few of those moves and it's always a crowd pleaser at parties/weddings.

I've heard that popping was more the term in southern California and strutting was more of an umbrella term in northern California for similar dance styles. The style in the first clip actually originated in San Francisco in the late 60's I heard.

I don't think many people know but locking, popping and strutting originated in different parts of California. Many people assume they started in New York but only Breaking(dancing on the ground) started in New York.

yeah..i believe that strutting had alot of roots in san francisco, living in the city as a lil kid and watching sheilds and yarnell at the wharf,it help spark alot of kids to copy them including myself, and with their talents they help bring the style of performance/dance "the robot" nationwide with thier variety show and apperances in commercials,tv,shows etc.(shields also taught mj and the jackson 5 how to do the robot)..they inspired generations of kids to strut, which later migrated to other styles like popping and waving,etc...with the help of soul train "locking" was widely televised, and quickly spread up and down the westcoast,in which all these styles of dance where performed in the clubs during the 70's,which later on added on b-boyin' aka breakdancing (spining on the floor styles from nyc)..which would be known as part of hip-hop we know today..

Strutting is NOT popping, it is a completely different style.
