why isn't oakland blighted? even the worst neighborhoods LOOK decent-ish, especially for being urban. go to SS chicago or to Kankakee or Gary IN... and those places actually LOOK terrible. why is that?

First, I wouldn't necessarily say it's not blighted. There is definitely blight in parts of Oakland. However, it's not an Oakland phenomenon. Typically, old, wood-built homes in the midwest, south, and east coast look far worse than bad neighborhoods on the west coast. In part, it's the elements. Homes in the aforementioned areas experience decay seemingly quicker than here on the west coast due to the elements, which are much more mild here in California. In part, the aforementioned neighborhoods also grew up faster and are typically older. I might also attribute a decent amount to construction of the times, when a lot of cheaper-to-construct, A-frame homes were built in the midwest in the 1950s plays a small role as well. I'm sure there are other less obvious reasons for it, but I think those things play the most sizable roles.
