Ditto Kensington, but I believe their kids have to go to West CoCo County public schools, which aren't exactly the best.

It's a farther commute, but what about the Santa Cruz mountains? Boulder Creek, Felton, Scotts Valley, and the 'Los Gatos mountains' area (Loma Prieta schools) are all bigger than desired, but have that smaller vibe and decent schools. Or the Kings Mountain unincorporated community up the hill from Woodside might fit the bill.

Or, for that matter, Pescadero (pop. 643). Unlike the places mentioned, it's isolated (i.e. it's not adjacent to or surrounded by other towns) so it really does feel like a small town, yet it's only about 45 miles from SF.

Orinda. Mill Valley, Fairfax. All have good schools, though the populations might be a little larger than you want. Great family atmosphere, though.

Montara and Moss Beach each have about 3000 people and are fairly isolated, but not that far from Pacifica or Half Moon Bay, I have no idea about the schools. OP may not like the oceanside weather either.

Start with a Craigslist search for the town where the job is. Put in your budget for a home, then increase distance from there, until you find your budget friendly rental. Then start searching school info.

I'm thinking you may want to look at the Anderson Valley area north of SF. There is an article in the latest AAA magazine (Via Magazine) about small towns in the Anderson Valley.

The thing is, the SF Bay Area is extremely populated. You will be looking at a commute to find what you're looking for.

I agree with the previous poster about looking at the Santa Cruz mountains, too. But, you are looking at a mean commute either way.

Anderson Valley is about a 3 hour drive from SF... just so you know.
