I have two job offers, one in Tracy for $430k and one in San francisco for $470k. Single, 33 years old, looking for good night life. Never have lived or been to the West Coast. Thoughts?

I'll take the 430, you take the 470.... but I'm losing on this!

San Francisco, hands down. Tracy is a bedroom community with lots of tract house subdivisions for families with children and not much else. Housing is cheap but there's zero culture and night life, and the weather is awful. I'd give it a pass if I were you.

$430K per year?

Tracy vs. San Francisco... This is like asking me if I want to get stabbed in the face with a fork or win the lotto.

I wish all questions were this easy to answer.

I had a job offer for that kind of money once.
It involved a lot of driving back and forth across the border and I didn't want to be away from the kids so much so I turned it down.

470k? Tracy is a little closer to the Mexico border. But just in case you're serious.

San Francisco is extremely expensive, although with that salary there will be 0 problem. There is a good nightlife in SF and none in Tracy. Housing/groceries/etc are MUCH cheaper in Tracy but with that income just move to SF and be happier.

On the other hand, if you move to Tracy, you'd most certainly be it's wealthiest resident.

Nope. There is some famous person that lives there. Forgot the name though.

I'm wondering if this is a serious question or if we're being trolled.

In terms of sheer dollars and cents, you would take Tracy for $430K. Much more housing and investment bang for the buck. You could by a nice home *and* an investment property for that salary there.

However, since you are a single man looking for night life, then San Francisco is what you want. Tracy is a remote "exurb", and a great place to be, if you are married with children. If you are Single? Not so much....in fact, not at all.
