Not a bad commute on BART from Walnut Creek (you can check it out on the website). There is a lot of diversity in the Bay Area. I don' see that being an issue. What kind of diversity are you looking for?

Rockridge feeds into Oakland Tech which is pretty good right now and improving. By the time the OPs kid is in high school i am sure several more high schools will be excellent.

But OP, the walkable areas of Oakland generally have good elementary schools and are safe, but are expensive and keep getting more so.

I'd agree about Alameda, but it is out of budget. Your budget is a severely limiting factor for your wishlist.
