thinking of taking a vacation over to San Francisco in the near future. haven't been since I was in pampers, so needless to say I don't remember a thing.

any of the locals on the boards have experience with places to stay downtown? thinking close to Chinatown or Union Square, but don't need to be across the street from anything famous. In other words as long as it's a fair price, nice place, and within walking distance of most sites to see, I'm good. someone will ask, so under $200 a night if possible.

I'm going to go with the assumption that SF is similar to Chicago in that you can walk safely to most places and those that are out of reach you can cab to. Is that a fair assumption?

Appreciate any assistance and guidance!

There's a decently-priced hotel in Chinatown, good location, nice place, on the corner of Grant, I forget the cross street. You can find places like you describe by Googling. Make sure you get a room with a street-side window. There are cheap, interior rooms with a view of the garbage chute, that you want to avoid.

Yes, walk/transit, or cab.

thanks Ruth. I've Googled and seen some but I've had good experiences with city-data posters and their recommendations versus an internet bot posting fake reviews on websites.

keep em' coming.

The Grant Plaza Hotel is the one I was thinking of. $99 and up. They have rooms for singles, with a single bed, that's probably the category that goes for $99. Again, be sure you get an exterior room, not one with a window on the air shaft. Or maybe those dark, air-shaft-view ones are the $99 ones. Anyway, you won't find a cheaper hotel in SF, except for one that's on the edge of the Tenderloin, and serves as a hostel for European backpackers.
