I am thinking of moving from kansas city to bay area sometime this year. Although I am still in planning phase I would like to take your opinion on how much % raise of my salary should I ask for as "cost of living" adjustment to my employer. I will be transferring within my same company doing the same kind of work. I do realise that this might sound kind of vaguel to most people but those who know a bit about both areas should be able to come up with an estimate.

I am currently renting a one bed apartment in a decent neighbourhood in kansas city and looking for similar living standard. I might have to work at Livermore and San Jose, so considering this what would be a good location to start an apartment search?

I think we need more info to help.

Or go to Craigslist.com and search for 1 bedroom apartments in San Jose. There are some sketchy areas there so look for the most expensive apartment and figure you'll pay that, maybe less.

Gas is expensive in CA and traffic is bad, take that into consideration too.

Here's my very rough montly estimate:
Apartment in decent area: 1,500
PG&E: 75
Phone: 30
Cable: 30
Internet line: 30

Call your car insurance company and get a quote, it may go up when you move. Food may be more expensive too.

Hope that helps.
