I stayed in Pleasanton for a whole week recently and I didn't hear any train. But I think the whole Bay Area is built near freight train. Even the other side of the Bay, like Palo Alto and Menlo Park, you can find complaints online about train noise.

Thanks, too, NewbieHere—that's good news too. I'm familiar with the train noise on the other side of the bay in places like Palo Alto and Menlo Park but not with the situation in Pleasanton, which sounded potentially worse and more like what we'd experienced elsewhere in the past. Someone recently told me that the train noise in Pleasanton varies depending on the time of year, which was interesting. No noise from BART, but some noise at times from freight trains.

I used to live near them but because I had double glazed window, I never heard the noise, it never kept me up and I'm the light sleeper.

I grew up in Pleasanton. Before all the growth the train noise was really noticeable with all the growth the noise from the trains became less noticeable. You will be able to hear the train anywhere near the downtown area at least at night. I lived a mile from downtown and could hear the trains. I got used to it though. Pleasanton is a great town.

Thanks, redhummingbird—I had a feeling that might be the case. From previous posts, though, it sounds like double-glazed windows would help. Pleasanton does indeed seem like a great place!

I think anyone would be happy there. Great schools, weather, people. And a cute downtown. If I could afford that would be one of my top 5 places to live.
