I know lake county has a negitive image due to one area in particular, and its not all THAT BAD there either. Get past the fact that meth is big in isolated areas here, but NOT AS BAD as other northern california locations. Its a nice scenic, quiet, clean, peaceful place to live. I recommend visiting the west lake area, because it is nicer, and more accessable. It's not perfect here, but then again, no where is perfect. IN REALITY, IT ISN'T EVEN 1/10TH AS BAD AS PEOPLE SAY IT IS. So Please, don't judge it until you have seen it, and breathed the CLEANEST AIR IN CALIFORNIA, and swam in the LARGEST NATURAL LAKE IN CALIFORNIA, or even seen the GEYSERS. Thats all I have to say. Don't try to prove me wrong, I've lived here, and all over Lake County for 35 YEARS. But don't take my word for it, come see it for yourselves!!!!!

I went up there about 7 months ago to look at a lot in Nice. What is the one area you are talking about? I would like to avoid it if choose to buy a lot and build an off the grid home. I live in the East bay and Clear Lake is still close enough to visit family on weekends. I would tell people it's the west end of the wine country. I have also looked at lots in Ukiah. I have found undeveloped lots for under 10,000.00. One day they will reach those lots with water and power so I would agree that this area could really be a boom in the next 10-20 years as people want to leave the bay area. O yea what is the area again to avoid?

My 2 boys & I have lived in Lake County - specifically the town of Clearlake - since Sept., although I've been coming here since I was about 12, to my grandparents house. They're both gone now & my mom needed someone to stay & take care of the property at the same time we needed a new place to live & I love it here. I lived here for 6 mos when I was 21 (16 yrs ago), & back then it was labeled a "welfare" town (mostly by people who'd never even been here). I guess that was the worst thing people could think of at the time. I hadn't been back since then, so I have know idea when, why or how it got the "meth" reputation so bad that whenever Clear Lake is mentioned (even down in SoCal), the response is always something about all the drugs, like it's some huge meth production & distribution center, swarming with tweekers running rampant & committing crimes 24/7. Not one person I've heard this from got their information from facts such as statistics, research, news reports or other media, or personal experience. They "heard it". Isn't that what makes something an Urban Legend? I've seen 3 news articles since i've been here (that covers all of Lake Co) having to do with drugs - all of them marijuanna, illegal & medicinal. Crimes in the paper's police blotter consist of drunken domestic disputes (dumb, not violent) & a stolen bike here & there. We don't even have a local news station. I've heard 2 sirens & both were fire trucks. The whole town shuts down by 9:30. Literally. One store & one gas station stay open later, but even the 3 remaining bars we have & the one taxi are done by 11 & it's totally quiet. Not usual tweeker behavior. Also we have no gangs or driveby's. It's a 5 min walk to the lake, the view from my bedroom & living room windows is an empty triple lot with trees & green grass like a mini forest. I don't really know very many people, & the few I do are more than twice my age, but everyone I've encountered so far are extremely nice, friendly & helpful. Not one a-hole. It is lacking in 'career' type jobs - my fiance leaves @ 4:30am to drive to Santa Rosa to work, & I plan on working for one of the resort/casinos when the time comes. Not gonna get rich but I don't care. It's worth it. Sorry for the long post, but there's a lot of untruths to set straight. If you have the chance come see for yourselves. Let me know if any of you decide to. I had a family visit from aneheim (sp?) that I met in this forum & it was great.

I think the northern california areas that are country have that rep. I have a friend who lives in Redding and his wife teaches school in Cottonwood. She sees the meth kids in her school because most of them live like hilbillies and shut out from the world to keep people away. She buys cloths and shoes for these kids quite often. That is where this comes from. Alot is true but if you mind your own bizness you should not have any problems.
