Hi all, I'm trying to help a friend out as he considers a move to SF.

His wife is looking at a position at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and she needs to live within a 30 minute commute. What areas do you recommend that aren't astronomically priced? They would rather not have to use the SF/Oakland Bay Bridge for the commute. Thanks in advance.

Jordan

You need to be more specific. For example: They need to live within a 30 minute car/public transit/walk commute to this hospital and they can afford up to $x,xxx/month. They want to live in a smaller unit apt, high rise, old, new, laundry on site or in unit, parking onsite, etc... Something like that! Otherwise, nobody can help you.

They're pretty open.

30 minute car/public transit/walk

Up to 4500/mo

They have a lab, so need some grass - somewhere...

1b/1ba+

Laundry in unit

2 cars to park on-site.

Thanks!

With a nice budget like that, they can have their pick of nearly every area IMO but the dog and 2 car parking might be what limits them. My first inclination is to try the modern high rises in the SOMA/South Park area; those tend to be very pet-friendly, with dog park on site and whatnot as well as W/D in unit as a standard feature. They also tend to have plenty of garage parking and the commute will be a piece of cake for the wife. If they do go with a newer building, I'd just shoot for a bit below their budget to accommodate rent increases each year.

Which hospital is it? Remember there are 3 campuses in San Francisco (Mission Bay, Parnassus, and Mount Zion) and the one in Oakland.

the benioff hospital is in mission bay. my mother also works there and lives in foster city. i was there recently and commuted from the hospital to her place with her in probably around 30 minutes. i wouldn't live any further south than that.

I agree with this answer - I'd also open it up a bit to Mission Bay, Potrero Hill, and Dogpatch since those will be right next to UCSF (as is most of SOMA). The OP could even walk or bike to the Hospital easily from any of those areas.

Good point... I haven't been to those areas since 2012 when I moved out of SF but I imagine they've got lots of new shiny buildings and amenities now.

Main campus is now in Mission Bay, but there are still doctors associated with the hospital that reside at other campuses (at least Parnassus that I know of). It would be important to be sure which campus it is. If it's Mission Bay, I would agree with previous suggestions of living near the hospital in the modern apartments - consider Mission Bay, Dogpatch maybe SoMa. I would also consider selling one of the cars as finding two parking spots may be a challenge and living in any of those neighborhoods with one car is very doable.
