It woke me up and scared my cat (he hid for a while afterwards). My kids slept through it. We're on the peninsula.

OP, are you from the Bay Area? Mild quakes like this are something Bay Area-ites grow up with. I realize the national news may try to milk any potential to sensationalize this, link it to the historic SF quake, or whatever, but these are no cause for concern, generally. It's good for the lectonic plates to relieve pressure this way. This is what they do. Thank you for your concern, anyway.

I highly doubt this even made the national news, it's the local news making a big deal out of it. The local news needs to let us know what people said on Twitter about it....

Woke me up for about 3 seconds then went right back to bed. The more small quakes we have the better.

Vs. cyclonic stuff. Small time worry unless you're new here. You can legally drive during an earthquake!

I was still awake (night owl) in the South Bay, and actually heard it before I felt it! The book/display case in my living room started rattling, and I was JUST about to yell at the cat, thinking she'd jumped on it... but then I felt the shake, and she was off the hook.

I've been in the Bay Area since 1983, and was here for the Loma Prieta quake - so yeah, it wasn't a huge deal or anything. But it had been a while since I'd felt a decent one, so it was kinda fun (since there were no major injuries or damages). LOL

Exactly. These mild quakes are welcomed here, since they "release the tension" without actually causing any damage.
