Down Santa Cruz way, I think Capitola Village is worth a visit. Yes, it's touristy, but the setting is nice (weather cooperating) and there are pleasant ways to spend time. Fewer hippies than downtown Santa Cruz (is that positive or negative?)

Since not much has been suggested for the mid-Peninsula portion of the itinerary, I'll mention the obvious: Half Moon Bay. Prepare for potentially grueling traffic - weekends especially. Don't go at all in October.

I've been over to Capitola, but didn't really see anything noteworthy. What would you recommend there? It's a tiny "downtown".

I agree, go to the redwoods near Santa Cruz, rather than Muir woods, MW is always so crowded, it is hard to apprecaite the beauty of the forest. Capitola is cute in a quaint sort of way.
