Should We Leave the Bay Area for San Diego?

I prefer the older areas of town, pretty much from Mission Hills east to Kensington, but it sounds like that will be too far from where OP would be working. Although nothing is really that bad compared to the Bay Area. I have friends who commute from Chula Vista to Poway and La Mesa to Mira Mesa, for example, and they aren't behind the wheel any longer than many folks in Silicon Valley.

Everyone's different, of course, but for us, we love the old architecture and the urban neighborhoods of those areas like Kensington too, but we ended up loving being in a newer home on a larger lot with a better floor plan in a safer area and just drive into town for dinner. :-)

Just a quick update, my wife eventually agreed that we should move to San Diego, and I accepted the job offer (which allowed me to telecommute for up to 6 months, before moving). Then when I informed my current employer, they countered with allowing me to transfer to their San Diego office (Sorrento Valley) while keeping my salary/bonus package. This salary is just too good to pass up (180k) for San Diego so I will stay with my current employer, and we can move from 6-12 months from now (our ideal timeframe).

Looking at housing prices, I think we should be able to afford something good enough for us in University City.

That's wonderful news! Keeping your salary and moving to a less expensive region? Win-win. We hope you love our fair city!

Great choice, University City has the best location in the region imo. Great schools too.

Thanks. I mean we could consider Carmel Valley or Encinitas (wife wants some jewish community), but commutes would be worse vs maybe better/newer houses.
