Where do you live? They're operating outdoors like everything else & the equipment is under tents & with added circulation BUT it is by appt. The AQI hasn't been that high this whole time tho....it has been changing day to day & it's much worse in Sf. We've gone from mostly moderate by us...with a couple of days going up to unhealthy & very unhealthy. We're super lucky to be healthy tho & not too affected by it. There are some ppl that are sensitive ofc...even when it's been moderate & if you have heart or lung disease, it can be bad.

BUT.. IMO...just take a few days & exercise in your home on the peak days....but IMO it's no reason to stop exercise or walking outdoors for 3 wks. It's not like there has been an AQI of 150 to 200 for weeks tho....not by us anyways. Your post made it sound like that's why you can't go for a walk as a stress reliever.

AND....concentrate on proper breathing technique to help your exercise.....it should start in your belly & don't hold your breath...like many ppl do without realizing it... causing you to gasp for air & increase your respirations. You should always breathe deeply....using your diaphragm. Lots of ppl don't & it causes them to take shorter & more shallow breaths & that causes a rise in blood pressure & heart rate.

I'm in Contra Costa County. I think they have recently re-opened businesses but the gym we belong to is still closed, even if it is allowed by the county. They may be working out some type of arrangement with the landlord, I don't know. But, they haven't opened indoors or outdoors.

And yes, the air quality has been in the unhealthful range for at least a week straight now. Prior to the heat wave, we did get some breaks of good air and I was able to get outdoors. Since then, it has just been too stagnant. It should improve within a couple days, so I hear.

Besides all the poor people who lost everything in these horrific fires, I can't even imagine what's happening to the wildlife and people who evacuated but left pets or horses behind. It's just too horrible.

Yeah, was hopeful for getting a run in this morning but been 160-180 all day, no offshore breeze to clear it out today. Nother day on the trainer.

Contra Costa has consistently been worse. San Francisco or where I'm at in Vallejo most of the time we've had the offshore breeze that clears out the smoke in the mornings and evenings. Really only been the last three days that have been bad all day here. Contra Costa doesn't get as much of that depending where you're at. Richmond does, but not Concord or Walnut Creek.

I live in Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley) and the air here has been terrible for several days now. I had to gas up my car yesterday and clean off the windshield and rear window, and by the time I got back in my car my eyes stung, my throat was scratchy, and I was coughing for the next several hours. I hope this clears up soon. It's difficult to believe this is happening along the entire west coast! I've never seen anything like this and I've lived here all my life (I'm 56 years old).

Wasn't LA like this in the 70s? I'm not old enough to remember, but the images I've seen of it look similar to what all of CA is experiencing right now.

The smog was bad, yes, but we never had so many fires at one time or so much smoke. Fires happened every few years, not every year like they have recently. Someone should do a study about how many fires are due to arson vs. natural causes (dry lightning).

For the past couple of years, I haven't heard of as many man-made or arson fires as in previous years. One notable exception is the "gender reveal" fire last month in Southern California.

These fires are almost all climate-change fueled--drought, heat, wind, freak lightning storms that blow in off of tropical systems from hundreds of miles away...

About a month ago, when that unexpected thunderstorm blew in in the middle of the night. I was awake and watching TV. The emergency alert went off and I knew we were in for a bad one. My first thought was about fires. The next morning I woke up to the faint smell of smoke.

It's been with us here for nearly four weeks now. I'm thankful it's just the inconvenience of smoke that we have here in SF. Excited to open windows full-time again soon, but content to wait it out in hopes that the breezes stay calm and don't complicate things.

I have no idea how firefighters are able to deal with fires of this magnitude. It's 24/7 for weeks at a time and they've started reporting the burn areas in square miles, instead of acres. However, containment levels are finally rising.

Grateful for their service.
