The Ferry still goes from Staten Island to Manhattan, a few blocks south of Wall Street. It's about a 20 minute ride. Before the Verrazano Bridge, people would cross over with their cars on the bottom level of the ferry. Times Square was a lot different in the 1950's. Mainly noted for Movie Premiers at big elaborate and plush movie theaters. I remember my feet sinking into plush carpet in the lobby when our Staten Island grammar school class saw "The Robe" in a Times Square movie theater.

The Bay Area is very spread out, so it is not surprising to me, that people do not spend time travelling to every small part of the BA. When we lived in San Francisco, & later on the Peninsula, we did explore all the towns of San Mateo county, particularly those along the coast, all the way to Santa Cruz, but very little time in the East Bay. If we wanted to see something other than San Mateo county, we tended to explore Marin county.
East Bay was to meet someone if we had occasion to do so.

If you have no reason to go to Oakland, then I'm not sure why it'd be weird. When I was a kid (back in the 70's/80's), outside of going to the zoo/Fairyland, or airport, it was mostly avoided. Oakland had a bad reputation so you wouldn't really be inclined to take a driving tour. Nowadays, there's great bars/restaurants/concert venues so I go fairly often (outside of Covid era)

Oakland, even during the pandemic, has never felt more crowded.

I've had a couple jobs that involved lots of on-site visits and sales calls, so I've probably spent at least an afternoon in every city and town in the Bay Area and beyond. If it weren't for that, guaranteed I'd never have been to 90% of those places.

I have an aunt that has lived in the Montclair neighborhood for several decades, so pre-Covid, we would go and see her a few times a year. I also hang out in Rockridge from time to time, attended A’s and Raiders games (before they moved to Las Vegas), visited Jack London Square, and also liked to visit the Oakland Museum of California (very underrated museum, IMO), near the Lake Merritt BART station.

I find parts of Oakland to have character, but of course, there are some parts to be wary of.

To 'never set foot in Oakland' is a bit weird; that said, to rarely do so is common - particularly depending upon what part of the Bay Area one lives (and whether one has easy access to SF). Since the GSW left Oakland last year, I no longer have any motivation to do so, even rarely.

A friend of mine's dad worked for the same major corporation for over 40 years, from the late 1930s, until about 1980. When he retired, he was the head of one of the largest divisions in the company and, during those entire 40+ years, he worked in San Francisco. One of his subordinates had not only also only worked at the HQ in SF, but this subordinate had also only left the city limits of San Francisco once in his entire life ....and that was to go with a family member to a restaurant in Oakland for dinner. He didn't drive, was single, never married, never had any children, didn't like sports, and did like restaurants and entertainment, but felt that SF provided all that he deeded on those scores. He was born in SF, all of his schooling was in SF, and his parents never took him out of the city. Except for professional similarities, my friend's dad was just the opposite...was married, had a large, active family, and loved traveling. My friend's dad didn't understand why the subordinate had decided to be this way, but it didn't sound as though he ever held it against the guy (I was friends with my friend's dad in addition to my friend).
