I was never impressed with SF any more than with LA, NY or Chi town. The the majors are lately being woefully mismanaged, exploited and have apparently lost appreciation for their natives.

I think the same dynamic is true here in NYC. Many have left in 2020, but most have stayed in the tri-state region, and many of these folks, especially the wealthiest, will probably return when the pandemic is under control.

You can’t keep a good city down.

I thoroughly disagree. SF was a mecca of techies many of which will be allowed to work remotely on a permanent basis now. To there is absolutely no need for them to come back here. I think the city will be hit pretty hard as those techies were a major part of what kept the city economy flowing but time will tell. I certainly hope that's the case anyway.

You're forgetting YOY increases in tourism and visitor spending (over $10B in 2019 pre-pandemic). It's nonsensical to (attempt to) forecast its economic recovery or 'status' without mention of such; every legitimate study speaks to it front and center.

Yup. Health Care, Finance, Tourism are all huge industries in SF. The City was arguably better before the techies came en masse .

(Relevant) point being, tourism can't be restructured/relocated in the same sense as health care, finance or tech (potentially) could, relative to SF's 'status'/the thread - particularly by comparison to other cities.

This is true. My brother left SF after nearly 20 years to Vallejo due to some family reasons in 2018. He did say that the tech bro growth made leaving SF a lot easier for him, because SF seemed to have developed a much more corporate, less kitschy vibe.

That’s not really the type of economy you want to depend on though.

It's simply illogical to (randomly) discount $10B annually (pre-pandemic).

Don’t you get it? For a number of people, SF can’t do anything right. If tourism is doing well - tourist jobs are crap jobs. If it is not doing well - tourists dont want to come because liberals have ruined the city. Anything is spun to fit the narrative

Sure but what made SF such a “super star” city wasn’t really tourism jobs. It’s much more concerning if SF loses well paid white collar jobs.
