I recall having to book an appointment in advance to go to Muir Woods. We were there April 4 or 5, 2022. Has that changed?

I always take my out of town visitors to tour Wine Country, Napa and Sonoma counties via Highway 29. You will need a car, and it is a scenic way to spend a day wine tasting and taking in the sights. Some great restaurants and winery tours too.

I also take my visitors to Crissy Field, to walk and take in views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

You probably have the most up-to-date info then (post-Covid).

Thanks. And not that it was empty.

I was there for my 65th bday and a wedding in Mill Valley on April 2, 2022.

If you rent a car, pay for the insurance rider. Your car will almost definitely be broken into.

Not if he only uses it to go out of town, and returns it the same day.

Car burglaries (aka “smash & grab”) are endemic all over the city. Be careful not to leave valuables in the vehicle.

I would stay out of the “Tenderloin” (near Downtown), and probably the “Hunter’s Point/Bayview” neighborhoods (SE side of the city), although crime can potentially occur randomly and in any portion of the city.

There are crummy parts of the city (just like anywhere else), but some really nice areas also.

Would be nice to hear from the OP, so we have a better idea of what his/her interests are, and can provide suggestions accordingly.

OP?

It used to be one of my favorite places, when I lived in the Bay Area. Usually deserted, especially on drippy days. But not any more, now you have to take a shuttle in.

I hate what's happened to California. Other places complain about Californians moving to their area, but we've been driven out by incomers from all over the world.

True, I mean, if he doesn't go park in Oakland, Vallejo, or some of the other troubled areas.

4 years ago, my family and I visited SF for one day. ONE DAY. When we parked on a well lit, major street in the central area and went to an amazing Afghan restaurant for 2 hours, someone broke in. It took me about 4 months to get an insurance payment.

That's why I suggest if you travel to SF, even if you're going out of town, go ahead and pay for the rider.

Mother-in-law lives in Oakland and I really wish she'd relocate. "Oh, someone got shot outside my apartment last night. There's a homeless encampment on the lake. I don't go outside after dark. But I love it here."
