Many are already listed, but I can add a couple.

Palace of Fine Arts is a gorgeous setting of architecture and it makes great photographics. Take a camera. Behind is the already-mentioned fantastic Exploratorium, which is a hands-on science museum that appeals to all ages. There is one night (monthly? weekly?) when admission is free. I always toss in a couple of bucks, anyway.

If you're healthy, hike up to Coit Tower. The only admission is the elevator to the top, which you can forego. You still have lovely views on the grounds, plus there are cool murals inside the building.

Take a bus to Baker Beach on a sunny day. However, pay attention to time and the bus schedules, because I had a problem one day with a bus back that never showed up.

Why doesn't anyone talk about Twin Peaks? I go up there, especially at night, and just think, read, and stare for hours. It feels as if you're at the top of the world. Oh, and it's free =P

Here are a few photos I took from up there. Please PM if for some odd reason, you plan on using them.

Hey Puccy! Nice pics from Twin Peaks I love it up there too! I usually take visitors up there myself...I kinda like the fact that it's a bit of a hidden free place!

And Fort Point has got to be ONE of the COOLEST places to check out for free...if you time it well with surfline, you can even just hang in the parking lot and witness the insane surfers that ride the break around the point (from under the GG Bridge) and dive off just before they smash into the rocks by the street! All within 30 of the parking lot!
Nothing beats watching surfers cruise by with Alcatraz in the background...

The Ferries to Vallejo and Oakland. Circle the Bay on Public Transit, BART, LightRail and Caltrain those are especially good on "Clean Air Days" when Public transit is free. The F Trolley is as much fun as the Cable Car for Me. Breakfast at Louies near the Cliff House. There is a operational 5" Coastal Gun on Baker Beach and an Operaational NIKE Missle Site in the Marin Headlands, but I don't know their schedule.

We recently started a blog about this stuff. It's new (and we're new), so we still have a lot to cover. I hope it's ok for me to plug it for anyone interested,
