Taking a job at Stanford. Wondering where the most affordable place you be to live that meet the following standards.

1. Decent neighborhood (school does not matter)
2. 45 min. or less commute to Stanford during work week
3. Most affordable location.
4. Having public transportation would be a great plus

I do not know the area very well so any help would be great. Thank you all for the help.

Also is Halfmoon bay a good option?

Check out Redwood City, Mountain View or maybe Sunnyvale. All are middle class and safe suburban towns and within less than 10 miles of Palo Alto (maybe 20 minutes or less). Palo Alto itself tends to have expensive rentals as does parts of Menlo Park.

There is public transit between the above places mentioned and Palo Alto and Stanford.

Half Moon Bay would be a bad commute. The highway (hwy 92) between HMB and I-280 is a windy 2-lane mountain road with sometimes truck traffic. But a nice place to visit on your days off. Being on the coast, the weather in HMB tends to be cooler, often with fog than the above places mentioned.

Redwood Shores is another nice suburban town. The town, built mostly in the 1960's and 70's, is on the bay and there are parks and walking trails with access to the water. Probably a 20 - 25 min commute to Palo Alto.

Redwood Shores is an upscale planned community built on landfill, similar to Foster City. The commute from there to PA is a breeze.

Default housing

Housing will be cheaper south of Stanford than North. Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Cambrian, West San Jose, all nice places and (relatively) affordable. Redwood Shores, Foster City, and San Mateo also options. I-280 is a great commute; public transit lousy not great in CA but you can take either Caltrain to Palo Alto or Valley Transit Authority (VTA) buses

Good luck!
