Fisherman's Wharf is very touristy and pretty safe.

Union Square is a bit more elegant, and safe as long as you stay north of O'Farrell street.

Mission and 5th I would avoid.

Near Union Square stay east of Mason, anywhere west of there is the Tenderloin which is not a good area especially at night.

Mission and 5th could be ok but you're just one block from 6th street which is a really crappy ghetto full of drugs and crime. Mission and 4th would be better.

Fisherman's Wharf would be ok and very safe but it's kind of isolated from the rest of the city.

Being in the Union Square area east of Mason would put you near a lot of public transit routes.

Fishermans's Wharf - been there few times and no issues in walking alone or catching transport. Touristy place and pretty safe as others have said.

Lots of shady looking people-it wouldnt necessarily deter me, and generally speaking, standard street smarts apply, but if your on vacation, why deal with that?

Generally speaking, anything on Market above 5th St is gritty all the way to Van Ness.

Yep, and I think that the worst part is from 6th Street to 8th Street.

It's not as bad as Mission and 6th but it's still kind of a grubby area with weird people hanging around and it gets really deserted at night.

If you can't decide on a place east of Mason that is north of Market, or a place that is south of Market and east of 5th street, then maybe check out the Best Western in Japantown, it was called the Miyako but I think they changed the name to Toma or something like that. The rates aren't too terrible and it's a very nice hotel. There are a lot of nice shops and places to eat in Japantown and Lower Pacific Heights is just north of the hotel up Fillmore which is also a nice area for eating after a day of wandering around the city. There is also another hotel across the street from the Best Western, it used to be a Radisson and last time I saw a room there it was really nice, not sure if it is more expensive than the Best Western or not.

Here are those two hotels actually:

The Best Western

Best Western Hotel Tomo | Japantown S.F. hotels | San Francisco Hotel

The Kabuki, which is the one across the street.

Japantown San Francisco Hotel | Hotel Kabuki | Luxury Hotel Japan Town
