I visited the Bay Area for the first time in years-- a few months ago. I drove El Camino Real, the commercial road that links San Francisco and San Jose, the entire 50 miles. What an eye opening experience. What shocked me was how little it had changed since the 1970s, especially in Burlingame, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City.

Here we are in one of the most dynamic areas of the United States and there was basically no real new real-estate development. The building on the road were unchanged since the 1970s. There was an incredible lack of good restaurants, shops, and commercial venues that are suited for the 21st Century. I thought I was going into a time machine.

Why so little change?
