Hi --

I apologize in advance if this has been asked already. I searched and didn't find an answer! We have recently relocated to San Francisco. Until now, I have been an independent contractor. As of August 09 I will be a proper salaried employee for a Virginia company. My annual salary will be 75k. How much can I expect my net income to be? Federal and Virginia state income taxes will be withheld from my paycheck. Am I responsible for California and Virginia state income taxes? Do I have to pay California income taxes quarterly? Is there an SF city income tax? Thanks for all your help!

You should pay taxes to the California State if you're living in California. If your pay stub still shows Virginia State, you need to change it to California State. If not you may/will receive a notice from California State tax board (after filing return next year) asking for explanation since your living address is California. It should not matter where your employer (in your case Virginia company) is located but you will be paying only one state taxes. During tax return, you will have to file both state returns.

I do not think there is a city tax but you may have to pay SUI/SD (unemployment/disability) tax in California.

I have not done quarterly taxes but if you search online, you may get more information on how it works.

I do not know the exact tax slabs. You may be paying around 25-28% tax for 75k.

If Virginia state taxes are being withheld (& you aren't a resident of Virginia) and you are considered a resident of California (& therefore have to pay California state taxes), you can probably get a refund of the Virgina state taxes that you paid at the end of year and use them to help pay the California state tax that you will owe for the same period.
