Hi! I am curious about how well upscale hairdressers can do in top salons in SF. Any ideas? Thanks

Years ago, I went into a Cheap Cuts type of place and ran into a guy who was WONDERFUL. He took my name and number and when ever he moved up he called his clients and we all went with him. He was a good haircutter, and knew hair -- he was a real artist. But it was my understanding from him when you go into a high end salon, you can't go into it with no clientele. When you go to work for a high end salon, you have to fill that chair, and you can't fill it with your 25 dollar clients -- you have to have clients that are willing to spend.

Now -- I had to drop him when he hit 70 bucks (this was ages ago!) and I dropped him far more because I just couldn't drive into the city and pay for parking in Union Square -- it was just too much for me to handle. I hate driving in the city.

But now, since I have another really good haircutter that understands my hair, I totally get just how good this guy was... So now I drive 50 miles to get my hair done.... and I don't mind it at all.

Dollar amounts? Well -- I don't know -- but all the cutters in the salon I go to are always on going on or coming home from trips, they all wear nice clothes, and in our COL area all own their own homes.... so they aren't doing badly...

I recently went to a place called Anvil in the Castro (17th & Church, approx), and had my hair done by Jeremy... my hair is VERY hard to deal with, since it's long, thick & curly, and he did a very good job. It's a fairly "upscale" salon, but the prices weren't too bad - about $60 for the cut and style.
