Hello,
I went to SFSU--moving there from Davis, California. I lived in the dorms for the first 3 semesters, and then moved out into the city. Many of my friends who I went to school with lived off campus as well. We didn't live near the wharf--as that would have been too far and a difficult commute via public transit. One plus of SFSU is that there is a Muni (subway car) stop right at the top of the school. As long as you pick an area to live in that is along that route ("M" car), it is uncomplicated to get to school. I lived in many areas around the city in my college day, but like living in the Haight Ashbury/Cole Valley area the best. I lived on Haight Street for a few years, and then when I met my husband (who was simply my roommate for a while there--we were just friends for an entire year!) we moved out to an apartment in Cole Valley, which is near the Haight. Both are great neighborhoods for college students! You do need to take a bus and transfer to the M or N car--but it isn't too bad as far as a commute.

I also lived near Church street in the Castro, which was a great, safe neighborhood. That one is on the M line, so easy access to SFSU. That M car will take you downtown, as well (Market St., Embarcadaro, Sutter, etc...).

Some people like to live in the "Sunset" area (inner near Golden Gate Park, outer sunset near the zoo) to be closer to SFSU. Nice areas as well, but more sleepy and more foggy--especially outer sunset.

I recommend taking a trip there first and checking it out, and then decide where you want to live. The wharf is really far from SFSU--it is on the other side of the city and takes lots of transfers by bus to get there. I worked on the Wharf in the Cannery Building one semester, and thought I would die from the commute! It took me over an hour each way, and S.F. is a small city.

I liked my time in the dorms there--but S.F. is such a great city that it almost seemed a shame to waste it in the dorms. It was a perfect way for me to meet people in the beginning, though. All of my roommates later came from my old dorm friends.

Good luck in San Francisco!
Lisa

When I went to SFSU I lived in the Westlake Village Apartments in Daly City. It's a fairly short bike ride to school. If you have a car it's faster to downtown from that part of Daly City than it is from the Sunset or Richmond. Much quicker to the wharf if that's where you need to be. Pretty convenient shopping compared to the city. For most of your entertainment you'd be heading into the city though.

The division is East/West not North/South. West of 19th Ave is Outer Sunset and East is Inner Sunset.
