My husband got a job in Milpitas near the 880/237. I was wondering if it would be better to live north (Fremont area) or south (San jose area) of Milpitas to avoid the commuter traffic. We would like to live opposite of the commute if thats possible. Thanks for any replies, we will be moving in September sometime.

Why not live in Milpitas itself? It's not a bad area (there are a few minuses, like the waste facility, but the smell's not that bad except in a limited radius) and it's pretty affordable for the Bay Area. There are also areas of Santa Clara (Rivermark) and north San Jose that would mean a very limited commute, probably without having to get on 880.

We are also looking in the Milpitas area but since we only have a really short time period to look and move (about 3 weeks), I have been looking in the surrounding areas as well. We just didnt want to find a home that is 10 miles away but turns into a long commute because of the flow of traffic. Milpitas is ideal but according to Craigslist, not too many homes available for rent right now. By the way, in what area is the waste facility located in Milpitas?

The waste facility's on or near Zanker, north of Tasman. We live near 237 and 880. My sense is that a commute that includes 880 would be much worse than one that's just on 237, but perhaps other posters have thoughts on this. That would open up parts of Sunnyvale and Mountain View, but they're probably much more expensive than Fremont.

Any commute that involves 880 or 237 will be pretty bad...your husband new work location will be where everybody else are heading too. Easiest commute will be to avoid the freeways...like Milpitas or North San Jose (but school districts are no good for these areas).

Well, parts of Berryessa (north San Jose) aren't bad for the schools. Check accordingly.

The K-8 school for much of Rivermark (I think it's called Don Callejon) is apparently very good. That's one of the no-highway alternatives. Lots of apartment complexes there if you're not looking to buy right away.

My babies are still a few years away from school which is a good thing because this whole moving experience has been crazy enough. In asking around, we have found that the best thing would be to avoid the 880/237 in both directions, if possible. As for apartments, with 2 toddlers, I would probably lose my mind! We have to have a house with a backyard, which just limits our options even more. Oh well. Thanks for all the input!

I routinely drive on 237 between 101 and Mountain View in the afternoon, and I've never seen a backup ever, except for people exiting onto 85. Longer ago, I used to live in Milpitas and commute to Mountain View daily. It was a grind until I passed North First Street, then it eased up. On the way home, it would back up again starting around North First and continue into Milpitas on Calaveras Blvd.
