I enjoy that Highway 17 bus from Santa Cruz (from several stops) . It is not expensive, is relaxing and takes about 40 minutes right to downtown San Jose.... Santa Clara Ave.

I drove this commute in reverse for several years. It's actually not a bad drive compared to what some will do for affordable housing - talk to some folks that drive 2 hours in from Tracy or Los Banos!

My commute was about 45 min on a good day. The problem is not the good days - it's the bad days when there's an accident on the hill, as others have said. Any accident will shut down the entire direction it's in - and possibly opposite, depending on how bad it is - for up to half the day.

However, those circumstances are pretty rare. I can only think of a handful of times in the course of 2-3 years where I was affected.

Santa Cruz is a great place to live - a fun city and the beach is great. It's also a short sweet drive to Monterey and Carmel.

I miss the area a lot! If I were in your shoes I'd do it, commute or otherwise!
