And if you just want to complain, then no place will be good enough.

I don't like San Jose all that much, but it's more affordable than elsewhere in Silicon Valley and it's not too far to my job. And, as others have said, there are plenty of more interesting places within driving distance: San Francisco, Santa Cruz, state and county parks, etc.

Yes, you need a good job to justify living here, and yes, if you can get the same salary elsewhere (I'm in tech, so I can't), then you have a cost-benefit analysis to perform which has variables that aren't the same for everyone. For example, some put a huge premium on weather, others want to own a house, which admittedly is an unrealistic goal for a large number of people in San Jose. Bottom line, if you don't like it here, why not move somewhere that you do like?

Its not just about San Jose but the entire bay area. San Francisco, Santa Cruz, the coast, Carmel, college and professional sporting events, concerts etc. all within a drive away. I feel very fortunate to live here and have a great job. I would rather live in a city where most people have great jobs then otherwise which contributes to being one of the safest cities in the country. I love the weather and the many choices that the area has to offer.

Too many hitech nerds in San Jose. It is a dull town. If you crave human interaction, SJ is not it.

Santa Cruz and county parks more interesting than San Jose?

San Jose is fine, my wife and I can afford a condo on her salary alone (I'm in school).

It's safe, quiet, pleasant weather. I suppose for people who want to go out to clubs every weekend it might suck, but I actually like the low key vibe of downtown better than S.F.

So... To each their own.

Yeah. San Jose is incredibly dull when it comes to social vitality and human interaction. I even heard it has like a 2-1 male to female ratio. Not only is it lame, its apparently a sausage-fest over there.
