My daughter lived in Sunnyvale, west of Mary in the vacinity of Cherry Chase grades school.

Housing is still expensive by any rational measure but a better value for a family with $130,000/yr income. The schools are decent, the area safe, and it is very family oriented.

If would choose to live in the Sunnyvale Area, I would consider somewhere in the border with Cupertino and you might be able to get your kids in the Cupertino school district. I grew up in the Sunnyvale School district and I turned out ok, but I think the Cupertino District is better.

As the MIL of a 'Tino teacher let me take a bow!! Note that my daughter lived in the Freemont HS enrollment area and didn't have a concern.

Based on what little I know of the Cupertio vs Freemont high schools for a person from Kansas... the football game at Cupertino High is a venue for the band and barely have enough participants to field a team, while Freemont High takes football seriously. At Cupertino "Tiger" parents abound. Huge difference in the cultures.

I do not know if the RedFin (realtor site) has school test data and parent evaluations for the Bay area, but pick a home for sale in each district and look at the bottom of their page.

Thanks. I know they offer something, just not sure yet. Honestly... this whole move seems somewhat unrealistic, given the COL. I'm not sure how you guys do it!

It's all about expectations. It typically takes 2 professional incomes for most people to live in places like Palo Alto, not one. Actually, I'd say it takes 2 professional incomes in this area just to own a single family home in what would be considered a so-so neighborhood in the Midwest.

The weather here is great, but many other apsects of life are much harder than in the Midwest. The high cost of living makes it a family un-friendly area.

IMO I think the really hard-core, hypercompetitive parents/families are at Lynbrook and Monta Vista. 'Tino is actually a bit more balanced in terms of school culture than the other two schools. Fremont High of course has a different ethnic/socioeconomic demographic.

This is great stuff... Especially the football comparison. We pay for private school now for our oldest; I assume we'd need to go public out there due to $, and we'd much prefer the football to be an avenue for the band.

Sunnyvale is actually quite close! And I found a "nice" Eichler in Cupertino... for $600k. <gulp>

If anyone finds this thread in the future, here's a great comparison site: neighboring cities

SO........ Doing some calcs.

$135k gross - funded 401k = $7400 take home (3 dependents, spouse wouldn't work)
$600k mortgage with $120k down = $2500/mo
Property taxes = $1000/mo

Surely $4k/mo is enough disposable income for a frugal family.

Do those numbers add up?
