I know it sounds weird when most people hate them, but I love big bugs-especially scorpions. I am from san mateo, and there really isn't much in the way of insects up here. When you combine that with the fact that virtually all land is either private, or a state park where collection is forbidden, I'm trying to expand my horizons, and maybe go on a road trip down to the Morgan Hill/Gilroy area. Has anyone seen scorpions, or any other big mean bugs around San Jose? Thanks, appreciate any replies.

Get 3 or 4 Praying Mantises.......just let them go in your house. They hang out and act all casual...eat bugs also.

I think the OP wants to collect them, not watch them be eaten. I remember being a kid in Pennsylvania. One day we had a praying mantis sitting above our outside door. My parents and I had never seen one before. No one wanted to go near it. As an adult it probably wouldn't bother me. As a kid that thing looked huge!

What....you are positing that the PM will end up eating family members?????????

No, they will chill out and eat bugs..........and you can pet them when you are watching TV.

We got these, but they're not exactly my favorite to run into.

Don't know about south, but I'm up in Mendocino (originally from San Mateo) and we have scorpions here. Depending on where you are and if you have a yard, you can encourage these critters to move in by providing them with a habitat that they look for. Scorpions like wood piles with leaves.
Plant tomatoes and you may have some good sized moth larva use the plant as home and lunch.

Really?
In Mendocino village? or in the county away from the coast inland...?

I am going to assume inland where you get some warmth...

Not technically a bug, tarantulas and false tarantulas. Plenty of them in the hills around where you are looking.

I grew up in Morgan Hill, up in the mountains next to the county park. You won't find what you're looking for.. I never saw scorpions. Turkeys, boars, mountain lions, bobcats, snakes, foxes, coyotes, deer.. yes. But not scorpions.

Santa Cruz Mountains feature these:

Somewhat irritating, but pretty harmless.
