We are moving from Texas to Milpitas for work. We like the idea of living in Santa Cruz but the commute and cost of houses is daunting. Any suggestions? A friend suggested the Antioch area as houses are more affordable.

My dad moved from Texas as well, and he chose Morgan Hill because you get more bang for your buck, bigger houses and lots, and still quite a bit of rural flavor in spite of the extensive development that has been done since we moved here. And the commute would be a lot better than coming alllllllll the way down 680 from Antioch..

The commute from Antioch would be hell. The commute from Santa Cruz would be hell also. Highway 17 from Santa Cruz is a windy mountain road with idiot drivers. Throw rain into the mix and you are at a standstill.

Antioch wouldn't be much fun either. Probably over an hour each way, without a wreck.

Try to live around Milpitas/San Jose for an easier commuter. It may be more expensive, but you wont be living in a car.

Strange, we moved FROM Milpitas to Texas in '05. Milpitas is as boring as they come, trust me, but is great for commuting since it pipes right into 880, 680, and 237, as well as Montague Blvd.

As others have said, 17 is a nice road to take to Santa Cruz on occasion, but treacherous as hell for a commute. If you're willing to take a drive, Gilroy may not be a terrible choice. Dublin would be my first choice, but I don't think it's any cheaper than the South Bay.
