Hello, Hello!

I'm a 30-something year old single man from Washington, DC considering accepting a job in Menlo Park, CA at Facebook. Curious to know which areas I should be looking at living in and which to avoid.

Ive read the forums here but most of the posts are a year plus old and things change daily. Wondering if you guys could recommend some reasonable areas for me to start my apartment search based on location, safety, traffic/commute, and fun things to do.

Location: I dont mind venturing off from Menlo Park but I am tired of the traffic but I am almost use to it. Commute time would have to be less than 30 (+/-) minutes.

Looking for: Ideally looking for a 1-br apartment. May or may not need to be pet friendly.

Budget: Most would be 2k a month but would like to stay below that for sure. Totally aware that Menlo Park is one of the most expensive towns in one of the most expensive parts of one of the most expensive regions in one of the most expensive states in the US.

Greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

San Mateo would be a good choice.

Avoid the city of East Palo Alto and the east side of 101 in Menlo Park. Newark or northern Fremont would be my suggestions, daily bridge toll and all. The Dumbarton isn't very exciting, but it is easy access to Facebook from a relatively cheaper area. From most of Menlo Park or Redwood City, it would take just as long as crossing the bridge.

I would check out listings in Menlo Park (there are some affordable apts), Redwood city, Redwood shores and Foster City.

The only areas to avoid would be East of 101 in Menlo Park, and south of Woodside Rd. in RWC.

I know people who do the commute from Fremont to Facebook and it easily clocks in below 30 minutes. You could definitely find a 1-bed for below $2000, since I've been scoping out 2-beds in that range.

Any rental companies to stay away from or check out?

Creekside Village Apartments‏ in Fremont looks promising.

If your budget is $2k for a 1BR, there's really no need to live in Fremont.
Anywhere west of El Camino in the Peninsula will be just fine.
