Besides the severe and insidious form of racism against blacks and Hispanics in Silicon Valley's tech industry, AGEISM is rampant. Thoughts? Experiences?

Have not seen it. I myself have no problems working with much older folks. There are 5 engineers in my division that are close to 60 years old; they still command respect and carry their weight exceptionally well.

Frankly, most of us in the Valley are too busy working to give a flying fvck about these issues.

Silicon Valley is skills and education based. I have blacks and hispanics in my company, who have the right set of skills and education to have a position in my company. Same with the other team members. I have some folks in my company closing in on 60, but have better skills and experiences than new college grads.

So, I don't agree with what the OP says.

Keep your skills, education and network current and you will be employed.

My experience and the experience of my partner have not included any sort of "severe and insidious form of racism against blacks and Hispanics", my partner has been working in all sorts of companies from startups to Microsoft and Netflix for almost 13 years, I have been working in Silicon Valley at various companies for almost 7 years, and also have not seen any such racism. I don't think Silicon Valley is racist or ethnically biased against Hispanics, well at least not to the same degree you will see in other areas.

I think the tendency to recruit using referrals does tend to create more homogenous groups than a successful general recruiting would do.

I read the article and did not see anything even remotely discussing race or ethnicity, so I'm not sure where you get the idea of racism against blacks and Hispanics.

SV just hasn't had to operate under the lens of PC bull-excrement like most of the world has. Not surprising that some sectors of tech, especially social media, are young. There's plenty of greybeards working the established tech companies, however. As far as racism, again, how many blacks and Hispanics are graduating from top-tier engineering schools? When I was at UC Davis engineering, I can tell you that number was just about zero. Lots of Indians and other Asians, good number of whites. Not many women, and even fewer blacks or Hispanics. Unless that's changed since 2008, who exactly are they supposed to hire?

Been here three years. Haven't seen racism or ageism. If you have skills, you will be respected.

My guess is that someone who sees "insidious" racism and "rampant" ageism going on all around them in SV probably needs to check their own attitude because that may be a big reason for not really thriving in their own workplace.

Here is a better article on so-called ageism in Silicon Valley. Actually, this one is about the age divide between younger engineers and their fondness for apps and older guys and their hardware. It also describes the youth culture around start ups. This article is from the NY Times. It's longer but well worth reading.

I suspect this is another phenomenon attributable to the Frisco spin-off of "Silicon Valley." Bros don't want dads salting their work game.
